Bookplates generally indicate "from the library of" or ex libris, which is Latin meaning "from the books of." Historically, bookplates were usually made of paper on which heraldic or other designs were engraved or printed. The earliest printed bookplates date from c.1480 in Germany with bookplates dating from 1642 in North America. The practice of designing bookplates flourished throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
